Description: A large tree with a straight trunk and rounded crown. Occurs mainly on moist soils of bottomlands and uplands. Wood is marketed for lumber. The acorns are eaten by many species of wildlife, and the leaves and twigs may be browsed by white-tailed deer and some livestock. Shumard's oak is a member of the "Red/Black" oak group whose leaf veins extend past the leaf margin to form bristles. Acorns mature in the fall of the second year. Often used as an ornamental.
